First taraweeh prayer in 88 years performed in former Hagia Sophia

In the former Hagia Sophia, which, by the decision of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was turned into a mosque, on April 2, for the first time in 88 years, a special prayer was performed in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan – tarawih prayer. It is reported by Anadolu Ajansı.

Muslims reportedly celebrated the beginning of Ramadan. In this regard, the head of the Department of Religious Affairs of the Republic, Ali Erbash, addressed the believers in Turkey.

Recall that the former Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was declared a museum by government decision in 1934. In July 2020, Erdogan ordered that the temple be given the status of a mosque and open for worship.
