The Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜİK) published a report last week, according to which, by the end of 2021, the population of Turkey increased by 1,065,911 people compared to 2020, to 84,680,273 inhabitants.
In addition to general statistics, TÜİK published data on the most densely populated areas of the country. The population of the province of Istanbul has reached 15 million 840 thousand 900 people, which is 18.71% of the total population of Turkey, so it is not surprising that 4 districts of the metropolis entered the top ten at once.
As of the end of 2021, the ten most populous areas in Turkey are as follows:
Esenyurt / Istanbul – 977 thousand 489 people
Cankaya / Ankara – 949 thousand 265 people
Kecioren / Ankara – 942 thousand 884 people
Shahinbey / Gaziantep – 936 thousand 351 people
Osmangazi / Bursa – 884 thousand 451 people
Shehitkamil / Gaziantep – 839 thousand 553 people
Kucukcekmece / Istanbul – 805 thousand 930 people
Seyhan / Adana – 792 thousand 536 people
Bagcilar / Istanbul – 744 thousand 351 people
Pendik / Istanbul – 741 thousand 895 people.
Remarkably, 57 provinces of Turkey have less population than the most populous district of Istanbul.
